Eastern Cape Road Trip

Things to do in the Eastern Cape

Road Tripping as part of things to do in the Eastern Cape

Firstly, I am very happy to have travelled to a South African province I had never been to! This officially marks travelling to 8/9 South African provinces to date, and yes, plans for the last province are already underway.

Having been to the Eastern Cape I was happy to share a list of my absolute must-do’s if you are ever in that part of the world. These activities were done over a couple of days with destination ranging from East London to the Tsitsikamma National Park. A very long, but well worth the memories road trip.

Having done a lot, these were my favourite things to do in the Eastern Cape in no particular order.

1. Sand Dune Safari

Now, if you have read my previous blogs, you would know that I have already been to the quad biking sand dunes in Cape Town and of course climbed the sand dunes in Namibia. The sand dune safari in the Eastern Cape was a pleasantly surprising experience. Here you get to experience a guided tour in the safari vehicle through the reserve and beach. This was priced at R400 per person (at the time of writing this blog). Something unique and well worth the price.

2. Sleep by the beach

It goes without saying that if you live in-land you definitely want to experience the beach as much as possible. Highly recommending accommodation with a gorgeous beach view. Also makes it possible to have those early morning or late evening beach walks. We got to sleep at a surf lodge right by the beach, so beautiful you can hear the waves from the bed!

3. Breakfast by the beach

Following up from the second point, most coastal areas have very cute restaurants that overlook the beaches. As a side note, these restaurants normally offer the best cocktails! Took the opportunity to visit some new food spots, for some personal food review blogs (obviously). In the picture is Verandah restaurant on the Port Elizabeth coast.

4. Tsitsikamma National Park

Also known as Storms River Mouth, this is one of the National Parks in South Africa. This has been on my bucket list for a long time. Well worth the wait! Beautiful natural views, very Instagram friendly sights and also very good for your health because I for one was not ready for all the walking that had to be done. You can also expect to see the Garden Route views. Entrance to the National Park is R68 for locals and R272 for international visitors (at the time of writing this blog).

5. Beach Walks

My most favourite free activity of visiting any coastal area. Eastern Cape has a lot of beautiful beaches to offer. There is also a wide range of publicly accessible private beaches which is a preference for me, mainly because I am there for the pictures and not any actual swimming. A list of some of their more popular beaches can be found here.

6. Horse Riding

This is another activity I like doing when travelling, probably because there isn’t any horse riding near me. Seeing that I am in Johannesburg, my best bet would be horse riding in Pretoria. Even though we survived, the route included going up the mountain on horseback. I am not a fan of heights and this was a bit to terrifying for me, I have to mention though that it was completely safe. Nonetheless, this activity was also R400 per person (at the time of writing this blog).

7. Breakfast on the go

Food again, obviously, we did not spend ALL our time on the beach and because this was a road trip we were literally moving from city to city. Regardless, some cute local food spots were found and they lived up to their reputation of good food and also allowed to us to attend some last-minute meetings (because work from home is still a thing due to Covid19).

8. Quad Biking

The Tsitsikamma region offers amazing quad biking views through the woods. A safe and guided tour that leads to the edge of the National Park cliff for some beautiful pictures. Quad biking is also a popular holiday activity and at this region it would cost R400 per person (at the time of writing this blog) which is the average nationally.

9. The Big Tree

The Big Tree Tsitsikamma is another Storms River tourism offering. It is literally a mini hiking area with a lot of flora on show, and of course the pretty big tree as the name states. Entrance to this activity is R50 for locals and R272 for international visitors.

I have posted more pictures and videos of things to do in the Eastern Cape trip (and more) on my Instagram page. Be sure to check that out This Reel that I put together after the trip for some more visuals.

Once again, thank you for reading.
