Things to do in Cape Town

Western Cape, South Africa

Even as a South African having grown up in the country, Cape Town is still a huge attraction for me and definitely a place I have always wanted to experience in my lifetime.

Cape Town is popular and a hotspot for tourists, the advantage of this is affordable accommodation, yes, Cape Town has a great range of cheap accommodation around Airbnb’s and hotel apartments. This is a huge benefit as you can always rely on cheap Cape Town travel. So, depending on your budget and preferred location you can expect to get a rather comfortable stay. Additionally, there is a wide variety of things to do in Cape Town, this is why Cape Town always makes a good vacation location.

Getting to Cape Town

Getting to Cape Town should not be a problem, the province (and Country) is well developed therefore transportation both for arriving and getting around the province is availabe. I am personally not a fan of long drives however driving to Cape Town is obviously an option but be sure to expect about 15 hours on the road if you are coming from Johannesburg. The alternative is using flights which I would recommend booking in advance to get cheaper rates, but these should range from 700-1500 South African Rand’s one way, if you are coming from Johannesburg.

Getting around in Cape Town is not a problem, if you have flown in then you can always make use of a rental car  which is readily available at the airport. There is also the preferred alternative mostly being Uber is available in the City, a cheap cape town travel option would be the bus, the city has a very reliable bus system that travels throughout the town.

With accommodation and travels out the way the main question now remains..

what does one do in Cape Town?

There is A LOT of options at very affordable prices, from site seeing to wine farm hopping, I have listed the things I got to experience below. You can find more pictures off my time there on my Instagram.

  • Table Mountain (obviously) the star attraction of the Cape, one can hike up the mountain or make use of the aerial cableway that is available at a fee. While there you can enjoy some shops and a meal.
  • Visit the beach, Cape Town has a lot of beaches to choose from where you can also have sundowners to a beautiful view.
  •  Bus and Boat tours, these guided tours that are available at a fee give show you around the town’s main attractions which is great if this is your first visit.
  • Markets, I am a huge fan of markets even in Johannesburg so I got to try out the V&A Food Market and the neighbourgoods market. Both markets were fairly full however you can still expect good food and good vibes.
  • Long street, if you are looking for a night of partying then look no further, this
is one street filled with nightclubs and food joints so options will not be a
    problem here.
  • Alcohol tasting, this might take a while L.O.L because I did quite a few tastings such as:

Stellenbrau Beer Tasting
  1. Wine Tasting at the House of JC le Roux, check out my full blog here.
  2. Beer tasting, I am not a beer drinker but fairly enjoyed the Stellenbrau beer tasting.

  3. Gin tasting, this was a quick tour before heading home at the Woodstock gin tasting house.

I managed to fit in a few activities however there is still so much I would like to do like:

  • The red bus tour (FOMO).

  • More wine tasting, I didn’t have nearly enough.
  • Hiking up Lion’s head, definitely on my to-do list.

safety

Cape Town is heavily populated, and it is a huge tourist hotspot, there have been a large number of crime incidents in the area, therefore, it is very important to remain vigilant at all times especially when moving around at night, also try to stay in groups. Be sure to research the places you would like to visit and always opt for the group tours if possible. Also, if you are not familiar with the area, avoid the township.

The SouthAfrican Explorer Review:

Did I enjoy the trip? Yes

Would I go back? Yes, there is still more to do

Side Notes: Cape Town is a beautiful city; one can expect endless fun there as there is so much things to do in Cape Town. I would suggest proper planning to maximize on time and be sure to make bookings in time as some of the places do get quite full during peak season.
