Monkey Sanctuary Hartbeespoort
also know as Bush Babies monkey sanctuary
A very interesting yet fulfilling experience for me during this lockdown was that I got to visit the monkey sanctuary, also known as Bush Babies monkey sanctuary. This was part of my visit to the Hartbeespoort region where I also got to visit the Elephant Sanctuary. These two sanctuaries are fortunately at the same place. They are located at R104 Old Rustenburg Road, Zandfontein.
Monkey Sanctuary Prices
So, the monkey sanctuary is typically R370 per adult, R270 per pensioner, and R205 per child. These were the prices at the time of my visit as well as the writing of this blog. This experience can also be found in a package that includes the elephant sanctuary and cable car ride which can be found on their site. If you do happen to visit the sanctuary on your birthday just like I did, your entrance will be free. Check out other things you can do for free on your birthday on my blog here.
The main aim of the monkey sanctuary is not only to allow visitors to interact with the primates but it also allows the guides to educate us on the different species of monkeys they have at the sanctuary. This is similar to what they have at the elephant sanctuary which I also visited. You can view my blog to read more about that wonderful experience here.
Free Roaming monkeys
On this visit, you can expect to walk through the trees on elevated wooden walkways, whilst the monkeys are roaming freely around you. You will be given a bowl full of food, this will allow the monkeys to come to pick and choose their desired foods from your bowl as you walk along.
At this particular sanctuary, you will see different species of monkeys, bushbabies, lemurs, and a lot more. They are all around you as you walk along with the guide educating you on the different ones as you go.
what should you expect at the monkey sanctuary?
You will definitely find monkeys roaming freely in their natural environment. Do expect a lot of interaction from the monkeys typically fighting over their favourite food. This includes a lot of playfulness, even some naughtiness too. You should expect them to climb onto you as well as grabbing and pulling of the food bowl. This is all safe, at no point in the tour did I feel scared or felt the need to panic. It is definitely a fun experience to be up close with the monkeys during their feeding time and get to be in their environment which is very different from seeing them through a cage like in the zoo.
The Walk
The trail is typically 3km long that is done over an hour. So, one would have to prepare themselves for a long walk. Therefore, it is suggested that you wear comfortable clothing and shoes. It is also emphasized not to have any loose items or clothing because some monkeys tend to pickpocket items as they are known to be very naughty. Again, this is completely safe provided you listen to the guide.
Overall, this is worth doing. I would definitely recommend checking it out if you are in the area.
